Autumn Internationals 2018

The Autumn Internationals have seen the four home unions – England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales – face the heavyweights of southern hemisphere rugby in a month-long festival of rugby.

  • The undoubted highlight of the 2018 series was Ireland's historic first-ever victory over New Zealand on home soil, which led Steve Hansen to label Ireland the "No.1 team in the world".
  • Wales also made history by completing their first-ever autumn series clean sweep with victories over Australia and South Africa along the way.
  • England enjoyed a largely successful autumn series, which was marred only by a controversial single-point defeat to New Zealand at Twickenham.
  • Scotland experienced a mixed bag of results with wins over Fiji and Argentina, but losses to Wales and South Africa.

Among the matches contested between Six Nations vs Rugby Championship teams, there were eight matches won by northern hemisphere teams and five matches won by southern hemisphere teams.

There won't be any Autumn Internationals in the UK & Ireland next year with the Rugby World Cup taking place in Japan. However, the four home unions have arranged a series of Summer Internationals, which will be used as a warm-up before the global tournament.
